Understanding Reamer Bits

What is a Reamer Bit?

A reamer bit is a unique tool which does wonders in drilling wider holes using various types of materials that includes wood, metal and even bone. It looks like a fast spinning metal stick with razor sharp edges on its sides. This DeepFast tri cone rock bit is meant to damage the holes only as much as needed, and not excessive (Picture courtesy - Refractory shapes). A reamer bit makes the holes in a bell shape so that screws or bolts fit into them. This shape makes certain the screws or bolts do not shift too far as a result of being loose. This is a very important tool for all kinds of things from building to fixing.

How to Properly Use a Reamer Bit

For example, if you want to drill a hole for something small in size like an 8-32 bolt-then using less than the biggest bit is a good idea: drilling your way up instead of simply starting at that level or higher. Because one of the hardest steps in setting your bolts or screws is using tougher tools - you can make them much easier to use just by drilling a smaller hole first. It functions as a pilot for the reamer bit It is very important for you to work with the drill carefully, by turning around slowly in small circles as shown here. So now that hole is just a little bit bigger, and with no ragged edges to boot. Just be sure not to spin that wheel too quickly. Turning it too fast will wear out the reamer bit faster or in some cases cause it to snap.
